Johannesburg, South Africa — February 19, 2026
Former Zimbabwean first lady Grace Mugabe is reportedly distressed following the arrest of her son in Johannesburg on Thursday afternoon, according to sources speaking to SABC News Specialist Correspondent Sophie Mokoena.
The youngest son of the late Zimbabwean president, Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, was detained by South African police after a shooting incident at his residence in the wealthy Hyde Park suburb. Authorities say a gardener was shot and left in critical condition, and two men — including Mugabe — were taken into custody.
Police have charged the pair with attempted murder, and the investigation is ongoing. At this stage, the motive for the shooting has not been established, and investigations into the circumstances continue.
Grace Mugabe — who has previously lived between Zimbabwe and international destinations — is said to be deeply concerned about her son’s wellbeing following the arrest.
