Lebowakgomo, Limpopo — 21 February 2026
A 52-year-old man has been arrested by members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) attached to the Lebowakgomo Crime Prevention Unit (CPU) for the illegal possession and transportation of chrome estimated to be worth R300 000.
According to police, officers acted on credible information regarding a truck suspected of transporting precious minerals along the R518 road within the Lebowakgomo policing area. The vehicle, described as a white Sitrak truck pulling two blue trailers, was stopped and searched.
During the inspection, police discovered a large quantity of chrome. The driver reportedly failed to produce valid documentation authorising the possession and transport of the mineral. The suspect further indicated that the chrome had allegedly been loaded from an illegal mining site at Atok Village.
Police seized the truck and its two trailers, with an estimated combined value of approximately R2 million, along with the chrome.
The suspect is expected to appear before the Lebowakgomo Magistrate’s Court.
