Age Dispute Becomes Focal Point in Human Trafficking Trial
Palm Ridge — A dramatic turn unfolded in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court as defence lawyers in a high-profile human trafficking case challenged the official age of the alleged victim.
Attorney Carel Schoeman and his co-accused — the girl’s mother — are facing a combined 98 charges, including child trafficking, rape, sexual abuse of a minor, and the unlawful pointing of a firearm. Both have pleaded not guilty.
In cross-examination, defence advocate Sita Kolbe SC pressed former investigating officer Captain Veronica Banks on whether the girl’s age had been confirmed through medical tests. Banks admitted no medical assessment had been conducted, saying police relied on the girl’s birth certificate and her mother’s statement.
The defence also pointed to an identity document listing the girl as 18 years old — a document investigators dismissed as fraudulent.
Testimony revealed that the girl had previously mentioned another relationship and undergoing an abortion, but Banks stressed that such claims did not necessarily imply sexual intercourse.
Adding to the intrigue, the mother’s aunt testified about receiving a phone call from the girl, who allegedly asked to live with her. Prosecutors are also scrutinising a payment record that appears to show money transferred to the girl’s mother, suggesting potential financial motive.
The trial, already marked by conflicting testimony and disputed evidence, is set to continue with further cross-examination and new witnesses in the coming days.
